Nietes named best boxer
BY NIDA BUENAFE

The championship title in boxing may have slipped from the hands of Western Visayas but its pin weight entry, Negrense boxer Gerson Nietes, bagged the best boxer citation in the 2008 Palarong Pambansa in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Nietes, cousin of boxing champ Donnie, outclassed Davao’s Glenn Canteveros in the championship bout, registering 52-38 in the judges’ scorecard to rule his division, but the win was not enough to dislodge the Davaoeños from its top spot in the rankings as four of its boxers snagged the gold in their respective categories.

Joan Vincent Moraldo beat WV’s Jhon Dabert Arcilla in the powder weight, Mark Anthony Bariga overpowered National Capital Region’s Jerome Sarong in mosquito weight, Englebert Moralde Jr. prevailed in paper weight, and Jerwin Ancajas crushed Zamboanga’s Nicko Tayo in light flyweight to capture the boxing gold for Region XI or the Davao region.

Western Visayas settled for silver overall while host region MIMAROPA took the bronze.

Region VI also finished second in secondary girls’ tennis team event with the quartet of Jonicka Martina Guba, Eilyn Peralta, Marialyn Troncoso and Erdilyn Peralta placing behind NCR’s Sarah Jane Lim, Rachel Regina Lucero, Louise Lopez and Joan Therese Opulencia.

Another silver for Western Visayas came from secondary girls’ table tennis team competition after Benjielyn Dauan, Grace Rebollos, Juliette Gayoso, and Denelyn Dionio yielded to CALABARZON’s Kimberly Medina, Carla Rosuelo, Bea Magpantay, and Lusha Madernal in the finals.*NAB
