RP to produce more rice: GMA
BY RENE GENOVE

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said yesterday the priority of her administration is agriculture, adding “We have plans to plant rice more.”

Arroyo was in Dumaguete City yesterday to attend the birthday celebration of former Rep. Herminio Teves, and hold dialogs on the faith-based rice distribution scheme, and the insurgency problems in Negros Oriental.

“Due to our low production of rice we try to buy imported rice from Thailand and Vietnam. And Vietnam prioritized our country with 1.2 million metric tons of rice this year,” Arroyo said.

Army detachments eyed
in CARP problem areas

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Regional director Rodolfo Inson of the Department of Agrarian Reform said yesterday that military detachments will be provided in problematic areas covered by the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program in Negros Oriental.

At a discussion with farmer beneficiaries in CARP-covered areas of the province yesterday, Inson said that among these problematic areas are the Polo Plantation in Tanjay owned by former Senator Rene Espina, and the Ruben Carballo Estate in Bais City.

Inson, however, clarified that these military detachments are temporary, and urged the farmers to unite, plan their action, and “hold on.”

Affirm rebel amnesty,
Gloria urges Congress

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo exhorted Congress anew yesterday to affirm the government’s amnesty proclamation to pave the way for communist rebels who want to rejoin mainstream society and live in peace to do so soonest.

The President issued the call during her private meeting with rebel returnees from Negros Island, a Malacañang press statement said.

Congressional confirmation of her amnesty proclamation would enable the communist rebels to rejoin society and live with their loved ones again, the President said.
