Siquijor dads earmark P1.8 M
for agri-enhancement program
BY RENE GENVOE

Siquijor Gov. Orlando Fua Jr. said yesterday that he has set aside P3 million from this year’s budget for an agricultural enhancement program that will include fishery, livestock and crops.

Set for the procurement of seeds and fertilizer is P800,000, Fua said, adding that the newly established Bio-N Mixing Plant in the province  is his “favored project.”

He said that Rep. Orlando Fua Sr. has pledged another P1 million from his congressional fund to assure local Bio-N producers of a ready market.

Rep. Fua said all farmers should realize how effective the local product is, and that the first three months production of the Bio-N should be given for free. That is where the P1 million goes, he said.

The solon also vowed to buy more solar pumps for the province and urged heads of other agencies to write to their respective departments concerning the need of the province for more solar pumps to boost farm production.

He said farmers are already equipped with knowledge and have learned new technologies but all these need devices to work well.

Meanwhile, the Siquijor Department of Environment and Natural Resources spearheaded the 18-day Earth Day People’s Caravan around the province to encourage more people to think green, to care and to protect the environment Tuesday in Siquijor.

Following the Larena-Enrique Villanueva, Maria-Lazi Route, participants proceeded to barangay Ytaya of Lazi for the distribution of certificates of title to 79 awardees.

During the patent distribution, Regional Technical Director of Protected Areas Wildlife Coastal Zone and Marine Services, Director Disocoro Melana said the theme “Tubig ay Buhay: Ating Pagyamanin at Linisin” stresses the need for people to clean and save water.

He said that the relevance of the caravan is anchored on necessity to increase the level of awareness of the DENR employees and the public on  DENR thrust and programs, and information education campaign, as the banner program of Secretary Jose Atienza Jr. for 2008.*RG
