EARTH DAY ’08

BY RENE GENOVE

The 18-day Earth Day People’s Caravan on the theme “Lakbay Para sa Kalikasan, Lakbay Para sa Buhay at Kinabukasan” in Negros Oriental will end today.

Dioscoro Melana, Regional Technical Director of the Department of Environment and Natural Resource-7, said they need to advocate and communicate the objectives of the Earth Day celebration, and inform the public on how to save Mother Earth.

He said the caravan is moving people from one place to another in an orderly fashion, to encourage participation from various sectors, including local government units, non-government and people’s organizations, church and the business sectors.

Last year, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo designated April 20 for

Earth Day celebrations in the country. Environment Secretary Jose Atienza Jr. announced that 2008 shall be geared towards their information, education and communication campaign.

Meanwhile, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Antonio Cabrido said there is a need for the people to clean and save water, and to stop throwing garbage into rivers and lakes.*RG
