BY NIDA BUENAFE

Six gold medals are at stake today in athletics as competitions start in the 2008 Palarong Pambansa in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Hoping to capture the overall championship after placing first runner-up last year to the National Capital Region, Western Visayas athletes are eyeing the gold in today’s secondary boys and girls’ javelin throw, secondary boys’ long jump, elementary and secondary boys’ triple jump, and elementary girls’ shot put.

Last year, Maika De Oro reigned in elementary girls’ shot put with her golden heave of 9.58-meter while Bago City’s Jossie Entrina took the silver in secondary girl’s javelin throw behind Aiza Rosero of Region V.

MAYOR’S CUP
Province’s squad beats UNO-R
BY NIDA BUENAFE

The Province of Negros Occidental drew first blood in yesterday’s curtain raiser of the 2008 NBA Mayor’s Cup Open Basketball Tournament with a 74-67 victory against CEGASCO/University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos at the  Tay Tung gym in Bacolod City.

The game followed the opening rites attended by Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia who commended the NBA officers, led by its president Oscar “Dodong” Bascon, for their continued effort in tapping basketball talents in the city.

Bascon said their group believes that only through a series of tournaments can the local standouts improve their craft, and eventually, be given a break for the big league such as playing in the Philippine Basketball Association.

Ladies defending champion Anya Tanpinco and ICTSI Team mainstay Joey Huerva will lead Bacolod bets in their respective divisions when the 2008 Philippine Amateur Golf Championships open May 28 to June 1 at the Negros Occidental Golf & Country Club in Marapara, Bacolod City.

The two will face stiff opposition from a tough field consisting of national team players and amateur stars from Tommy Manotoc’s Calatagan, Luigi Yulo’s Canlubang, as well as the pool of talents from Ricky Razon backed ICTSI National Golf Team.
