MAYOR’S CUP
Province’s squad beats UNO-R
BY NIDA BUENAFE

The Province of Negros Occidental drew first blood in yesterday’s curtain raiser of the 2008 NBA Mayor’s Cup Open Basketball Tournament with a 74-67 victory against CEGASCO/University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos at the  Tay Tung gym in Bacolod City.

The game followed the opening rites attended by Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia who commended the NBA officers, led by its president Oscar “Dodong” Bascon, for their continued effort in tapping basketball talents in the city.

Bascon said their group believes that only through a series of tournaments can the local standouts improve their craft, and eventually, be given a break for the big league such as playing in the Philippine Basketball Association.

He said the eights teams participating in this year’s NBA summer league have in their roster top basketball players mentored by seasoned bench tacticians who will be giving each other a hard time in order to capture the championship.

“It will be an exciting tournament and the opening game between CEGASCO/UNO-R and Province of Negros Occidental was just a preview of more exciting games ahead,” Bascon said.

NOBC/Tough Trucks/BUS Group takes on Province of Negros Occ. tomorrow in the first game scheduled at 6 p.m. while UNO-R will clash with West Negros University in the second game.

Meanwhile, Ruth Angelie Tan of Coverdale Place Beach Resort/Pontevedra was named Miss NBA Mayor’s Cup 2008 in the fun competition among the team’s muses while Joyce Ann Jimenea of Marwin Pawnshop was first runner-up.*NAB
