| Unseeded local player Vincent Filoteo pulled the rug from under Cebuano Cyril Camporedondo with a stunning 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (10-8) yesterday to capture the boys’ 18-Under title of the Bacolod leg of the Head Junior Tennis Tournament at the Noah’s Haven Tennis Court in Barangay Montevista, Bacolod City.
Filoteo climbed out of an 8-4 hole in the tiebreak, winning the next six points to post the improbable win over the No. 3 seed in more than two hours.
Filoteo’s victory compensated for the loss of fellow Bacolod hope Tao Yee Tan, who yielded to Macy Solon of Dumaguete in the girls’ 18-Under finals.
Solon, winner of the Davao, Cagayan and Dumaguete legs of the tour, hammered out a 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 triumph over Tan, the second seed.
Tan did not come home empty-handed though as she prevailed over Ronalyn Singson, 6-2, 6-3 for the girls’ 16-Under crown.
Grabbing the limelight at the close of the three-day tournament was RJ Singson of San Carlos City, who won the 10-Under and 12-Under crowns.
Singson dumped Carl Catedral, 6-4, 6-2, for the 10-Under title, before smashing Andrei Marceto of La Carlota, who retired trailing 7-5, 2-0 in the second set.
Jessa Mel Singson overwhelmed Abigail Amador, 6-2, 6-2, to win the girls’ 12-Under title, even as Eldred Cinco of Cebu came away with an exciting 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (11-9) win over Ariel Jay Torion.
Roxanne Alipala crusied to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Isabelle Mesa of Iloilo for the girls’ 14-Under crown. In an all-Cebuano final, Franklin Encarnacion proved too strong for Camporedondo, 6-4, 6-2 for the boys’ 16-Under title.
The series shifts to Iloilo City from April 18-21, before the Cebu leg from April 24-27, Bong Arguelles, Philippine Tennis Association-Western Visayas vice-chairman, said.
The Baguio leg is scheduled April 30-May 3, while the Manila stop is set from May 5-10, he added.*CPT
