The celebration of Earth Day as part of the worldwide environmental awareness campaign is one way of informing the public how they can help save Mother Earth.
In Negros Oriental, the caravan intends to encourage and draw participation of the various sectors in the province that includes the LGUs, NGOs, POs, church and business sectors and the public at large. Seen as an annual environmental awareness drive in the country, Earth Day was initiated in 1962 by former US President John F. Kennedy and is now being celebrated worldwide in the month of April.
The caravan that will last for 18 days and end April 22 is in line with the information, education and communication campaign of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
In our country, the water issue is very serious. There is a need for the people to clean and save the water, and to stop throwing garbage into the rivers and lakes as this leads to pollution and creates unhealthy surroundings.
We call on the different local government units in Negros Oriental to think green and to proactively work for the protection and conservation of our environment.
We are celebrating Earth Day and we hope all the people in the world, especially those in the grassroots level will wake up to the need and the responsibility of all to help save and protect our planet.*
