Monkeys attack farming village

About 40 monkeys attacked a farming community in Sitio Camulayan Gamay, Barangay Mambaroto, Sipalay City, 5 a.m. Sunday, and ate their bananas, root crops, pineapples, and jackfruits, Maya Bascones, 20, told DYEZ Aksyon Radio yesterday.

David Castro of the Negros Forest and Environmental Foundation said the monkeys that exist in Negros are known as the long-tailed macaques.

They probably attacked the farming village because their habitat in the forests has gradually been destroyed, Castro said.

Bascones said that, in the past, the monkeys came alone or in twos, Sunday was the first time they attacked as a group.

They even entered houses in search of food, she said.

Villagers said they captured four of the monkeys and noticed attempts by the others to rescue them.*
