La Salle duo makes
nat’l beach volley finals

IN NATIONAL PRISAA
BY CEDELF TUPAS

There was no heartbreak this time for University of St. La Salle's Marlon Luces and Mark Sabusap.

After falling short by one win last year, the La Salle pair clinched a spot in the national finals of the 12th Nestea Beach Volley Tournament after finishing third place in the Visayas eliminations at the USLS sandcourt in Bacolod City.

The La Sallians avenged their first day loss to University of San Jose Recoletos, 21-18, 18-21, 15-9, before smashing University of San Agustin, 17-21, 21-18, 15-11, to secure the last berth to Boracay Island from April 24-27.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Three hardy taekwondo jins from Negros Occidental yesterday proved to be the saving grace for a sputtering Western Visayas campaign in the National Private Schools Athletic Association Games here.

Middleweight Catherine Samonte of Riverside College claimed a third straight gold medal, while John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation standouts Rubylyn Mapa and Crystal Pauline Reyes captured back-to-back titles in the featherweight and finweight divisions, respectively.

On a day when the Region 6 contingent cornered 21 golds, Samonte, Mapa and Reyes stood out at the Ateneo De Zamboanga Gym.

ZAMBOANGA CITY – With disappointment in athletics and swimming looming, Western Visayas yesterday revved up its campaign in other fronts, including chess, volleyball and football, on Day 2 of the National Private Schools Athletic Association Meet here.

Western Visayas' booters grabbed the top spot in its group with a 2-1 win over fancied Davao at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex.

The squad of coaches Noah Sajo and Carlo Torbela fell behind on a 13th minute strike from Glenn Balaquina, before Ryan Lirio's deflected effort leveled the match in the 38th minute.
