Save Banica River drive on

The Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club will join a series of activities in line with the worldwide celebration of Earth Day, to preserve the Banica River, the only source of potable water in Dumaguete City, a press release from the group represented by events coordinator Paultom Paras said.

Reports have shown that the incidences of pollutants in the river have risen towards dangerously high levels in recent years, Paras said.

Activities will include the Coastal Road Clean-up on April 19, covering Flores Avenue and North Bound Terminal; Earth Day: 5-K Banica River Run; and Exhibits on April 20 at the Quezon Park, Dumaguete.

The Dumaguete government is preserving its “Child Friendly City” tag in Central Visayas through programs aimed at addressing the concerns and uplifting the plight of children. City Social Welfare Officer Marina Mendoza said yesterday.

Mendoza said that one of the programs for children this year is the annual summer camp participated in by 300 indigent children aged 9-12 years old, held at the Dumaguete City High School.

The activity is aimed at giving these children from various barangays the opportunity to experience a real camp-out the scouting way, complete with trails, bonfire, map reading, knot-tying and other indoor and outdoor skills, she added.

A memorandum of agreement on the use of the crime laboratory of the Negros Oriental State University by the Philippine National Police was signed during the recent Metro Dumaguete Peace Advisory Council meeting in Dumaguete City.

NORSU president Dr. Henry Sojor yesterday said they will also field their Criminology students as auxiliary police in Dumaguete.

Sojor said the use of the crime laboratory is their way of helping the police to fast-track the investigation of crimes in Negros Oriental.
