Assumptionistas’
Golden Jubilee

IVY

It was a grand Red-Letter Day for Diamond, Golden, Ruby and Silver Jubilarians of Assumption Iloilo. From the very beginning, the orchestration of such an event proved to be a daunting task. After months of meeting and practicing for the Velada, Class ’57 came from all over to buckle down and rehearse like mad for their mean Boogie Woogie number which of course brought down the house.

Class ’58 had to rehearse separately as half of the dancers were in Iloilo. The choreographer had to take the ferry every week to teach them their steps.

Classmates from the US and Canada all wanted to be in the dance too, and as soon as they arrived, they immediately began to rehearse. The dance was not just the ordinary Cha-Cha. It was the dancesport style with a lot of intricate steps and dazzling moves. The ladies’ “golden bodies” had a hard time adjusting but they vowed they would do it despite the ravages of time.

Mercifully, theirs was the most applauded number! Class ‘67 presented a series of song and dance numbers to the nostalgic tunes of the 60s and 70s. A beautiful composition by Teresa Chan was danced with her singing it.

Getting together with classmates of yesteryears was sooo much fun and exciting. The girls laughed their hearts out reminiscing over the good old days and recalling the silly things they used to do. It must have been heartwarming to see the old familiar faces (and places) after all these years. The Jubilarians roamed the school grounds, happily surprised to see a lot of new additions. The highlight of the celebration was an elegant dinner at the gym which capped the jubilee. Soon it was time to go back to reality and the task of daily living, but everyone promised to come back in 2010 for the Centennial of Assumption, Iloilo.*
