LADY SPIKERS, BOOTERS POST HUGE VICTORIES
BY CEDELF TUPAS

ZAMBOANGA CITY – A Western Visayas quintet packed with height and heft but wanting in bravado yielded its first two games yesterday, dimming its chances of making the semifinals of the National Private Schools Athletic Association Meet here.

Bannered by West Negros University, the region six squad's pride took a big hit when it blew a 21-point lead at halftime and lost 80-74 in overtime to Davao at the Golden Boys Covered Court yesterday morning.

Five hours later, the WV cagers, second placers last year, suffered a 69-67 loss to Cotabato, represented by Holy Trinity of General Santos City, in a defeat that could put them out of contention for the title.

W. Visayas struggles
as NCR takes control
BY CEDELF TUPAS

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Western Visayas struggled in the face of tough opposition and could only come up with two silvers in athletics, while powerhouse National Capital Region frolicked under sweltering conditions at the start of the National Private Schools Athletic Association Games here.

University of St. La Salle standouts Jossie Entrina and Analyn Gabayoyo provided the silver medals for the Western Visayas contingent, which lagged fifth in the standings being paced by NCR, which snared five golds, two silvers and a bronze on Day One.

Entrina settled for second in the women's shotput with her 9.68meter effort. The gold went to NCR's Jelyn Rojas of the University of the East, who threw 9.98m.

BEACH VOLLEY
UNO-R tandem
stays in contention

BY CEDELF TUPAS

The University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos tandem of Jenny Torres and Julie Anne Billote bounced back from its Day 1 loss with twin victories yesterday that kept its hopes alive in the 12th Nestea Beach Volleyball Visayas at the University of St. La Salle sandcourt in Bacolod City.

The UNO-R tandem tamed FU (21-18, 21-11) and foiled USLS' attempt to recover from its frustrating loss against University of Visayas earlier with a 21-3, 21-8 triumph.

Still with an unblemished record after three games, defending champions, Janez Armie Igot and Jusabelle Brillo of UV will face University of Southern Philippines Foundation today, while UNO-R battles Southwestern University.
