City employee suspended
for wrong tax assessment
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Deputy Ombudsman for the Visayas has slapped a one-year suspension without pay on a Dumaguete City Hall employee for violations of Republic Act No. 3019 or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.

Upon receipt of the suspension order, Mayor Agustin Perdices yesterday issued a directive to implement the order of the Ombudsman suspending Julius Ricardo for one year without pay, effective April 16.

Ricardo’s suspension stemmed from the complaint filed by Danilo Amores and company, involving the effectivity of the tax assessment made by Ricardo on the Uymatiao property located at the corner of Locsin and Perdices streets that was allegedly moved to 2007 instead of 2006, depriving the city of more than P182,000 in tax revenue.

LGUs told to observe
sanitation in facilities

BY RENE GENOVE

The executive director of the National Water Resources Board in Dumaguete City is calling on local chief executives to make sure that sanitation is observed in public facilities in their localities.

Ramon Alikpala of the NWRB said public places such as city and municipal halls should have safe, clean water and soap in the public comfort rooms.

He said the province takes this issue more seriously and should be commended for trying to increase awareness of this problem that is plaguing the entire country.

Corn-eating Negrenses
shift to rice, NFA says

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Negros Oriental Provincial manager Gil Ibarra of the National Food Authority said yesterday that 50 percent of corn-eating Negrenses have shifted to rice, thus, doubling the supply requirement for rice in the province.

Insufficiencies of rice and corn production in the province have resulted in the rush to avail of the imported rice by the NFA, Ibarra said.

Records show that the province produces only 50,000 to 60,000 metric tons of rice annually, but the consumption is 1.5 million bags per year.
