| ZAMBOANGA CITY – Thirteen golds are up for grabs today on Day One of the athletics competition of the National Private Schools Athletic Association Meet at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex here.
The final events are in high jump, shotput, 100m, 400m, 5,000m walk, men's long jump and women's discus throw.
West Negros University's Jonalyn Pula will compete in the 100m, while University of St. La Salle's Jossie Entrina banners the Western Visayas bid in discus throw and shotput.
Teammate Analyn Gabayoyo, also of USLS, sees action in the high jump event.
Also vying for top honors today is WNU's Hyacent Traigo, who will go for gold in the 5,000m walk.
The WV quintet, bannered by WNU Mustangs, is in for a tough first-day schedule, battling Region XI (Davao City) at 8:30 a.m. at the Golden Boys Covered Court, before taking on Region XII (SOCKSARGEN) at the JEMSC rubberized court.
The WV cagers of Dennis Tumayan are expected to miss big man Jason Melarin, who is still awaiting his credentials from his former school, St. Francis of Assisi College.
The La Salle Lady Stingers will spearhead the West Visayas bid in women's volleyball starting today.
They face Region XII at 8:30 a.m. at the JEMSC, before their 4 p.m. meeting against Region II (Cagayan Valley) at the Claret Gym.
The men's football team, represented by WNU and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and USLS, fell into a formidable three-team group that includes Region XI (Davao) and Region XII (SOCKSARGEN).
First up for the WV booters, who have added Iloilo standouts Paolo Suner and Peter Sobrido to a NOPSSCEA line-up led by Mark Ferrer, JP Gardose and Miguel Gonzales, is Cotabato at 8:30 a.m. today at the JEMSC pitch.
The JEMSC, a sprawling facility near the Zamboanga port, is also the site of the games in sepak takraw, softball, baseball and swimming.
The WV men's table tennis squad of multi-titled coach George Jimenez also fell into a tough bracket together with last year's third placer Region XI (Davao) at Pilar College.
Jimenez, who was named best coach by guiding the women's squad to the title in 2007, is hoping to get back at the Davaoenos who bumped them off for a semifinal seat in last year's tournament in Iloilo City.
The taekwondo weigh-in was held yesterday with women's flyweight bet Ma. Daphne Alindogan needing to shed almost one kilo just to make the 50 kg.*CPT
