Science seminar conducted
BY RENE GENOVE

The Department of Education, Division of Siquijor, recently conducted a three-day divisional training in science for elementary and secondary teachers held at Solangon Elementary School, San Juan, Siquijor.

Participants were taught about the construction and use of improvised science equipment, and repair and maintenance of standard science equipment and content.

Training facilitator was Science research specialist Gerard Baron of DepEd in Central Visayas or Region VII, who underscored the need for science teachers to develop do-it-yourself, improvised and low-cost science equipment despite limited funding of schools for the purchase or acquisition of standard, brand-new science equipment.

Science is a very difficult subject to teach without instructional materials, he said.

The teachers were also trained on a range of focuses that seek ways and create innovative solutions to bump up equipment needs inside the classroom, and were taught skills to repair old common laboratory apparatus like microscopes and balance beam.

Elvira Paglinawan, a secondary school teacher of Siquijor  Provincial Science High School, said that in the absence of the standard equipment in the classroom, teachers can use improvised materials as instructional tools.*RG
