| Leaving on April 15 for the 2008 Palarong Pambansa in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Western Visayas delegates are keeping their eyes on the overall championship title to improve its 1st runner-up finish last year in both elementary and high school divisions.
Victoriano Tirol, Education regional director, and head of WV delegates to the April 20-26 Puerto Princesa games, yesterday said the region is sending a 500-man contingent that will compete in all events.
The delegates from Region VI will be billeted in the Manalo Campus of Palawan State University, the biggest tertiary-level institution in the city. “We hope to improve our performance and if the overall championship title remains elusive, we will try to maintain our last year’s first runner-up ranking,” Tirol said.
WV is strong in athletics, baseball and softball and the athletes have been practicing hard, he said
Tirol added that athletes’ parents have been very supportive and local government units from where the players came from also provided assistance to the delegates.
However, he reminded the athletes that the ultimate goal of the competition is not winning or losing but sportsmanship, discipline, and wholesome relationship among the competing regions.
The Palaro calendars 31 events – 17 in the secondary and 14 in elementary level which will be played in 13 venues, including the newly-refurbished city stadium. Among the events to be played at the stadium complex are athletics, football, volleyball and swimming.
The local government of Palawan has spent about P60 million in the infrastructure requirements of this year’s Palarong Pambansa.*NAB
