| The Philippine Sports Commission is set to pass a resolution honoring and giving tribute to the late golfer Luis “Golem” Silverio who passed away Sunday, Commissioner Ritchie Garcia said yesterday.
Garcia said he already talked to PSC chairman William “Butch” Ramirez about the tribute to Silverio and Commissioners Joey Mundo and Eric Loretizo both agreed in a unanimous resolution.
Having known Silverio for a very long time and given the privilege of playing with him, Garcia said the late golfer is a great lose to Philippines’ amateur golf.
“I consider him as one of the best, if not the best amateur golfer we ever had,” Garcia said.
He added that Silverio had the opportunity to turn professional but he opted to remain an amateur and represent the country in various tournaments abroad.
Garcia encouraged golfers who are serious in their game, especially the young generation, to look up in golf’s history books the name of Silverio and be familiar with how he played and approached the game.
“I once heard him say that in golf everything is possible as long as you keep your focus.” Garcia said.
He also described Silverio as “very opinionated” and one who would not hold his punches when he has something to say.
“He was very frank, and some people simply can not get along with him,” Garcia recalled.
Another Negrense golfer, former Silay City Mayor Carlo Gamban, said that whenever the best golfers in the country gather to discuss the game, the name of Silverio and his achievements always crop up.
“I played with him and against him and he was a great competitor. He was really a nice guy who was very passionate about golf,” Gamban said.
He said Wack Wack Golf and Country Club, whose name Silverio carried when he won the Philippine Open in 1966 as an amateur, plans to give tribute to the late golfer.
“He deserves it and he can be a source of inspiration for all the aspiring golfers in the country today,” Gamban said.
Silverio died from emphysema or lung disease Sunday morning at the Riverside Medical Center in Bacolod City.
He is survived by his sisters Terry and Geevie and brothers Ricky, Boy, Tomas and Alberto. His remains lie in state at Alisbo Funeral Homes at Lacson Street, Bacolod City. The family has yet to decide the date of the interment.*NAB
