Local schools see action
in nat’l beach volley tilt

BY CEDELF TUPAS

Bacolod City-based schools University of St. La Salle, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod will see action in the men and women’s competition of the Visayas leg of the Nestea Beach Volleyball Tournament.

The tournament starts Tuesday at the USLS sandcourt with La Sallians Mark Sabusap and Marlon Luces hoping to finally crack the national finals after falling short by one victory in last year’s eliminations in Manila.

Despite their familiarity with the venue, the local pair believes it is not the favorite to win the crown.

University of San Carlos, which ruled the men’s event last year, remains the fancied team, Luces said, along with University of Southern Philippines-Foundation and Southwestern University of Cebu and Foundation University of Dumaguete.

The top three squads from each division will earn berths to the national finals scheduled April 24-26 in Boracay Island.

In the women’s division, La Salle will be represented by newcomers Sheryl June Denila and Jerriz Joy Solis, while UNO-R will have the veteran pair of Jenny Torres and Julie Ann Billote.

Defending the women’s title is University of Cebu. Expected to challenge UV are SWU and University of San Jose-Recoletos.

Also sending its teams in the qualifying tournament are Iloilo Doctor’s College, University of San Agustin, University of Iloilo, Colegio Purisima Concepcion and St. Gabriel College.*CPT
