One killed, 22 injured in mishap

One person died and 22 were injured when the jeepney they were riding rammed into the fence of the Philippine National Oil Co.-Energy Development Corp. post in Bacolod City yesterday, the police said.

The victims were brought to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital but Nida Nibla, 36, of Brgy. Bunga, Don Salvador Benedicto town, Negros Occidental, died of multiple wounds hours.

The canter-type jeepney crashed into the fence of the PNOC-EDC in Manayao Sayao, Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod, when driver Dante Bacarro lost control of the vehicle when the drag link of its steering wheel malfunctioned, PO2 June Garong of the Traffic Management Unit, said.

Injured and taken to the CLMMRH were Vergie Delantar, 48, Jun Rey Nibla, 14, Reymulo Bacalso, 45, Jocelyn, 27, and Nida both surnamed Barios, Rosita and Jesar, both surnamed Cañada, Merlinda Consuelo, Manuerda Hiyan, 53, Kate Mercado, Cecilia Magdato, Joy Escotum, 21, Samuel Mercado, Emma Anon, 34, Pancho Delfin, 48, Adonis, Damielo, Sambida Duray, Genesis and Germin, both surnamed Mercado, and Julieanne Garbanzos, Garong said.

Brought to the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center were Mia Marie Tomaro, 22, Bernardo Gomez, 75, Dionida Celnatro, 44, Deborah, 53, and Mansueto, 55, both surnamed Leonar, Garong said.

Bacarro was treated at the Riverside Medical Center, Garong said.

The jeepney, which was from Don Salvador Benedicto, is among the PUJ’s that travel an estimated 42 kilometers of winding road from the town to Bacolod.*PP
