Negros Occidental’s Gerry Peñalosa, the World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion, stands in the forefront of the Filipino charge in the Philippines vs. The World event set at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City tomorrow.

Peñalosa, 35, will put his title on the line against Ratanachai Sor Vorapin of Thailand in the main event of the card that will also feature five Filipino fighters, including Rey “Boom Boom” Bautista and AJ “Bazooka” Banal.

It will be the first defense of the title Peñalosa won last year against Mexican Jhonny Gonzalez in California.

Top-ranked squads Dynamic Builders and LRY-Europa try to forge a championship showdown Sunday when they clash with separate rivals in the semifinals of the Villa Valderrama 9-a-side Football Tournament at the Villa Valderrama pitch in Bacolod City.

Because of its impressive form of late, the Dynamic side of Ricky Yanson, which surged to the top of the table in the final two playdates of the eliminations, will be favored to beat Trimaxi in second game at 4 p.m.

The Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association contingent will leave for Zamboanga City tomorrow night in time for the National Private Schools Athletic Association Meet set April 8-13.

Roger Banzuela, chairman of the NOPSSCEA sports task force, yesterday said Negros Occidental athletes, coaches and officials will join their Iloilo PRISAA teammates in Iloilo City, where they will board a ferry bound for Zamboanga at 10 p.m. tomorrow.

NOPSSCEA will have more athletes than Iloilo in representing the Western Visayas contingent, owing to its collection of 13 titles in the Regional PRISAA Meet in Kalibo, Aklan held last February.
