DENR conducts caravan on healthy environment
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Negros Oriental will spearhead an information caravan in the province to campaign for a healthy environment, today until Tuesday, Antonio Cabrido, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer said yesterday.
The activity is in celebration of the Philippine Earth Day under Proclamation No. 1276 signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last year on the theme “Tubig ay Buhay, Ating Pagyamanin at Linisin,” he said.
The caravan route will start from Bayawan City down to Dumaguete City, and Ayungon, Negros Oriental through San Carlos City, in Negros Occidental, Cabrido said.
The route will cover participants from neighboring provinces of Cebu, Bohol and Siquijor where the caravan will gather in San Carlos City, for the turnover to DENR Western Visayas, he added.
Before the group sets off from Bayawan City today, an environmental program will be held to distribute land titles to farmer-beneficiaries as part of the major activities.
Yesterday, a forum was held in Dumaguete to drum up awareness on the need to conserve and preserve water resources, to be attended by DENR Central Visayas Technical Regional Director Dioscoro Melana and PENRO Negros Oriental officials as guest of honor and speakers.
There is an urgent need to raise the level of awareness on the gravity of environmental degradation and destruction of the natural wealth, that threaten all life forms on earth and the quality of life of many Filipinos, the DENR officials said.*RG
