Fisherman drowns

The police said they are still probing the death of a fisherman whose body was found at the coastline of a barangay in Bacolod City early yesterday.

The body of Joel Barba, 35, of Punta Salong, Manapla town, Negros Occidental, was found by Bantay Dagat members led by Asona Telo, in Purok Bayanihan, Brgy. Banago, Bacolod, at about 3:30 a.m. yesterday, the police said.

Barba allegedly jumped off a boat two days ago.

Barba, who was earlier tagged only as Mr. X, was later identified by his employer’s kin, SPO1 Carlos Belandres of Police Station 3, said.

Police Station 3 commander, Chief Inspector Leonardo Borromeo, said their initial investigation showed that Barba jumped off from their fishing boat near the area of Catabla, Manapla.

However they are probing why Barba’s belt was tied around his neck when he was found, he said.

Barba’s remains, which were brought to Manapla after he was identified, were scheduled to be autopsied yesterday, Borromeo said.*PP

Bacolod cops
apprehend 2 burglars

Two suspected burglars were arrested, hours after they allegedly broke into a commercial outfit in Bacolod City Wednesday and yesterday, the police said.

Mark Alojamento, alias “Toto”, 20, of Brgy. Carol-an, La Carlota City, Negros Occidental, and Anthony Buenafe, alias “Paki”, 28, were nabbed by Police Station 1 members in separate follow-up operations, hours after they allegedly forcibly entered China Mart at Luzuriaga-Locsin streets, Wednesday, police records show.

Business proprietor Allan Hsu told the police that their cashier, Sofia Inocencio, discovered that the P5,000 left in their cash register was missing, along with a backpack, at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Police records show that the suspects had entered the shop by cutting through its roof.

Alojamento said he and his mother were on their way to board a ferry for Iloilo City when he was apprehended by officers led by PO1 Robert Torreno, at about 10 a.m. yesterday.

Buenafe, on the other hand, said, he was calling jeepney passengers at the corner of Ballesteros-Gatuslao streets, when he was nabbed by officers led by PO2 Abelardo Berlin Jr. at about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No items were recovered from Buenafe and Alojamento, police records show.

Both men were “well-known” to pimps near the area of China Mart to have been the ones who broke into the business establishment, PO3 Celito Dullan of Police Station 1, said.

The suspects, however, denied the allegations, saying they were just doing their regular activities when they were arrested.*PP

IN VICTORIAS
5 persons injured
in road accident

The collision of six vehicles, among them two tricycles, that caused a 30-minute traffic snarl at the corner Osmena-de Leon streets in Victorias City, Wednesday, resulted in minor injuries to five persons, the police said yesterday.

Supt. Norberto Boston, Victorias police chief, said the series of vehicular accidents started after driver Nestor Mercado Jr. of a Fuzo cargo truck loaded with sugarcane, lost control of his vehicle, because of mechanical malfunction of its brakes.

Initial police investigations show that the cargo truck hit a Nissan pick-up vehicle, an Isuzo cargo truck and a Ceres Liner passenger bus, that also bumped two tricycles loaded with passengers.

Boston, however, said the victims were out of danger as they only suffered minor injuries and abrasions.

Mercado was held for investigations at the Victorias City Police  Station, Wednesday.*GPB
