NLRC denies ALU TUCP
motion for reconsideration

A glimmer of hope emerged Thursday that could lead to the reopening of the Dumaguete Port. 

The National Labor Relations Commission Fourth Division based in Cebu City has denied the Motion for Reconsideration filed by the Cipres Stevedoring and Arrastre Services Inc. Employees Union ALU-TUCP, seeking recognition as the collective bargaining agent of the Dumaguete port workers.

In a three-page resolution dated March 31, 2008, Commissioners Aurelio Menzon, Oscar Uy and Violeta Ortiz-Bantug said that the Collective Bargaining Agreement of the CISAI ALU-TUCP expired on June 30, 2004 and had not been renewed.

Sanitation efforts lauded

The National Water Resources Board commended the Negros  Oriental government for addressing the water  sanitation problem, Executive  Director Ramon  Alikpala  said at the opening Wednesday of the Visayas-Mindanao Water Sanitation Summit, at the Negros Oriental Convention Center in  Dumaguete City.

The summit on the theme “Sharing our Contribution in Building a Strong Nation through Sustainable Sanitation,” gathered more than 100 local chief executives, health officers, planning and development officers from Visayas Regions 6, 7, and 8 and Region 10 in Mindanao.

It is in line  with  the  United  Nations  declaration of  2008  as  the  International Year of  Sanitation.

Drug suspect apprehended

A drug suspect was apprehended by Task Force 24 in a buy-bust operation Wednesday for selling suspected shabu and marijuana leaves in Barangay Candau-ay, Dumaguete City.

Apprehended was Eugene Ramirez, 21, of Purok Saging in the barangay and a second year BS Electronics student of the Negros Oriental State University.

Police said Ramirez tried to elude arrest and this resulted in bruises in his knees and arms.  He was later arrested by operatives who cordoned the area.
