Unlike reported shortages in rice and corn, there is one major agricultural product whose production government need not worry about: sugar.
Sugar Regulatory Administration records show that for this crop year 2007-2008, sugar production is expected to reach 2.34 million metric tons with an excess production of about 140,000 metric tons.
“Based on our (SRA) production and consumption estimates, the President and the Filipino consumer need not worry about the supply of sugar," Administrator Rafael Coscolluela said.

SSS collection in
VisMin totals P11.62B in ’07
The Social Security System collected P11.62 billion in contributions from Visayas and Mindanao in 2007, 17 percent higher than its P9.94 billion collection in the previous year, SSS records show.
Collection from the two areas comprise 19 percent of the P62-billion total take from contributions in 2007, based on the results released during the SSS performance review conference held in Iloilo City recently.

BACGEM to implement
swine project in 2 stages
The Bacolod City Government Employees Multipurpose Cooperative decided to implement the Swine Livelihood Project in two phases because it is considered a “high risk business,” a press release from the group said.
Its Board of Directors decided to implement the first phase by giving the responsibility to the officers because of the risk of the animals acquiring Foot and Mouth disease, Hog Colera virus and other related diseases, it said.
The second phase of the project for the members was supposed to be implemented in the last quarter of 2007, but due to the Hog Cholera Virus that hit the swine industry in Luzon, the supposed series of orientation to inform its members was delayed, it added.
