Preservation of water pushed
BY MARICAR ARANAS

An on-the-spot drawing/poster making contest for children residing along the Banica River was held Sunday at the Banica River-Colon Extension spillway, to close the World Water Day celebration.

The contest organized by non-government agencies in Dumaguete City was participated in by at least 50 children below 12 years living in Brgy. Taclobo and Bagacay.

Event coordinator Paultom Paras said the activity was aimed at mobilizing the nearby communities to preserve the river.

Other activities included a clean-up drive of the river and a community-based participatory planning for barangay officials and purok leaders.

Helping in the Banica River Preservation Initiatives are the Metro Dumaguete Road Runners Club, German Technical Cooperation, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Foundation University, Provincial Planning and Development Office, Friends of the Banica River and the Environment, provincial government through Vice Governor Jose Baldado and the Dumaguete City government.

The World Water Day is an international observance and action to draw attention to the plight of the more than one billion people worldwide, who lack access to clean and safe drinking water, organizers said.

The  GTZ Water Resources  Development  and  the  province will  also hold a  convention  with  the  local  chief  executives  from  Visayas  and  Mindanao, today and tomorrow, to discuss the water  preservation program  in  the  country.*MA
