BY CEDELF TUPAS

ILOILO CITY --- With a strong showing in swimming, a lean but mean Negros Occidental contingent pulled off a third place finish at the close of the Philippine Olympic Festival Visayas Qualifiers here yesterday.

Negros bagged a total of 47 golds, all of which came from swimming events (see related story), 29 silvers and 15 bronzes, while Bacolod City, which also sent lesser athletes compared to eventual champion Iloilo Province and Iloilo City, came in sixth with a 7-1-0 haul.

IP registered an 89-90-71 output, followed by Iloilo City (60-55-47). Capiz, which dominated athletics, was fourth with a 23-19-21 haul.

ILOILO CITY --- Negros Occidental once again left its regional swimming rivals reeling in its wake in the Visayas leg of the Philippine Olympic Festival.

Iloilo Province and Iloilo City's combined output was not enough to match Negros Occidental's 47-gold medal haul in the three-day age-group competitions at the Iloilo Sports Complex pool here. The Negrenses also had 29 silvers and 13 bronze medals.

Iloilo Province was a far second with 22 golds, 35 silvers and 38 bronze medals, while Iloilo City posted a 19-15-14 record. Bacolod City, which sent only one swimmer, collared two golds.
