Negros Occidental is aiming to be the number one province in Western Visayas in ease of starting a business by 2010, the Provincial Small and Medium Entrepreneur Development Plan shows.

The goal is included in the Business Investment and Enabling Environment aspect of the harmonized SMED Plan presented during the Provincial Summit Series on SME Development in Western Visayas in Bacolod City last week.

Board Member Edgardo Acuña of the 2 nd District, who came in behalf of Gov. Joseph Marañon, vice chairperson of the Provincial SMED Council, said he is optimistic that the province will be able to create an environment that is conducive to business.

725,300 has. needed
for biofuel crops – DA

Fifteen companies investing in biofuel production need 725,300 hectares for planting of crops for feedstock, which requires P34.085 billion in investments, the Department of Agriculture said.

In its latest report, the DA Biofuels Feedstock Group led by Marriz Agbon said the projects are in various stages of negotiation and will involve the planting of biofuel feedstock like sugarcane, cassava, jatropha, corn, oil palm and coconut.

The negotiations are being participated by local companies in partnership with foreign investors from Australia , Japan , the United States , China , United Kingdom , Germany and India .
