+The Bacolod City government will start clearing operations at
the Central Market once the Sangguniang Panlungsod approves the
request of the mayor to proceed, Legal Officer 3 Vicente Petierre
III said yesterday.
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia has requested authority from
the Sangguniang Panlungsod to close Bonifacio and Ballesteros streets
in Bacolod City from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. after he was informed by City
Legal Officer Allan Zamora that they will clear Luzuriaga and Gatuslao
Streets of fish vendors.
The Mayor proposed that these fish vendors be transferred
to Bonifacio and Ballesteros streets so as not to deprive them of
their source of livelihood.
His request will be taken up today in a joint committee hearing
to be conducted by Councilors Alex Paglumotan, Dindo Ramos and Wilson
Gamboa Jr.
Leonardia has directed the City Legal Office to start the
implementation of various market ordinances of the city without
necessarily depriving the sidewalk vendors of Bacolod of their means
of livelihood.
The composite enforcement team started clearing operations
at the South (Libertad) Public Market on Sept. 15 to free the surrounding
areas of illegal vendors and ease traffic congestion.
Petierre said they have also started clearing operations at
the North (Burgos) Public Market to put order and to regulate vendors
in the area. He said they have cleared Galo Street of coconut and
charcoal vendors and transferred them to Ramos Street along with
other vendors.*CGS
