Writ of Amparo confab set
BY RENE GENOVE

The Dr. Jovito Salonga Center for Law and Development of Silliman University in Dumaguete City will conduct a seminar-workshop on extrajudicial killings, this Friday.

This is in line with the recent Supreme Court issuance of procedures fore the writ of amparo to protect the citizens from human rights abuses. Law Center director, Mikhail Lee Maxino, said the workshop will forge a concrete understanding on the nature and cause of extrajudicial killings.

He said the extrajudicial killings have become a major concern in the country and internationally, thus, the rules for the writ of amparo are available for any person whose right to life, liberty, and security have been violated or threatened with violation by an unlawful act or omission of a public personnel or any private life.

The workshop is in cooperation with the University of the Philippines Law Center. Chief Justice Reynato Puno has promulgated the rules for writ of amparo last week, to take effect on October 24.

"Amparo," a Spanish word which means protection, is a Mexican legal procedure aimed at protecting human rights.

This will compel government agents to look for a missing person or to bring out those who are believed to be in military custody.*RG
