Newly installed Games and Amusements Board Commissioner Juan Ramon “Monju” Guanzon yesterday vowed to promote the welfare of both Filipino boxers and their promoters, stressing the need to develop the sports discipline at the grassroots level.

Guanzon, who was sworn in yesterday by Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella at the kick-off of the 1 st Monico “Golden Gloves” Inter-Barangay Boxing Tournament at SM Bacolod, said he is yet to learn the ropes as GAB Commissioner, but he will try to do his best.

Also president of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association, and former Bacolod vice mayor, Guanzon said he grew up with a genuine love for boxing owing to his father's then Diamond Gloves stable.

MANILA --- In the absence of full-strength contingents in other events, Negros Occidental's swimmers and a sprinter from Bacolod made sure the province created some noise in the Philippine Olympic Festival National finals that ended here yesterday.

Swimmer Krestia Angela Lacson, a senior at St. Scholastica's Academy made the biggest waves, snaring seven gold medals and a silver at the close of the four-day swimming competition at the modern Trace Aquatic Center in Laguna.

Apart from Lacson, Negros Panaad swim club standouts Gerard Gelanga, Kiefer Piccio, Joshua Balinas and comely sprinter Jami Dawn Henares, an unattached entry from Bacolod , also provided golden moments for the province.

Pagulayan rules Oriental 9-ball tilt

Alex Pagulayan trounced Bacolod-born Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego, 13-9, Saturday to win the All-Filipino finals of the Negros Oriental International 9-Ball Championships at the Dumaguete Convention Center in Dumaguete City .

The 28-year-old Pagulayan recovered from a 2-4 deficit to seize a comfortable 9-4 lead en route to victory and the $20,000 top purse.

Gallego, playing under the Negros Billiard Stable, settled for the runner-up prize of $10,000.

The tournament was jointly organized by the NBS and Puyat Sports, a press release from organizers said.
