The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has served the Philippipne Ports Authority a Notice of Violation for implementing its Dumaguete Port Expansion Project in Barangay Looc without an Environmental Compliance Certificate.

A memorandum signed by Environmental Management Bureau Director Willian Cunado dated October 31, addressed to PPA Assistant General manager Claro Maranan, and received by the Dumaguete office on November 12, the DENR demanded an explanation within seven days why the PPA should not be made to pay the fine of P50,000.

The Notice of Violation was issued pursuant to Sec 4 of Presidential Decree 1586, which prohibits any project to be undertaken in declared critical areas or projects without an ECC.

Pagulayan snares 9-Ball title

World Pool 2004 champion Alex “The Lion” Pagulayan ripped Asian 9-Ball Tour champion Ramil Gallego, 13-9, to grab the Negros Oriental International 9-Ball Billiard championship trophy Saturday, at the Negros Oriental Convention Center, Dumaguete City.

Pagulayan pocketed the $20,000 cash prize while runner-up Gallego received the $10,000 plus a trophy.

Reps. George Arnaiz (NegOr, 2 nd district) and Josy Limkaichong (1 st district) handed other cash prizes to the players amounting to a total $90,000.

Kagawads condemn
colleague's slay

The League of Barangay Kagawads in Dumaguete City condemned the killing of a member last week, and expressed concern about their safety while supporting the government campaign against illegal drugs.

Outgoing Liga president Juancho Gallarde said relatives of drug personalities may have the wrong notion or misconcepcion about barangay officials testifying against the suspects.

He said that in some instances, barangay officials refuse to accompany policemen during illegal drug operations for fear of retaliation.
