Bacolod and Negros Occidental aim to generate at least 10,000 offshore and outsourcing jobs and the same number of qualified professionals by 2010, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said yesterday.

Batapa-Sigue, convenor of the Uniting for Bacolod-Negros Occidental Educational Foundation for ICT (BNEFIT) Conference and Preparatory Workshop, said this was the commitment about a hundred local stakeholders who attended the conference last November 15 and 16 at the Grand Regal Hotel in Bacolod City .

The participants came from the ICT industry, government, academe, business, real estate and the media.

The rice production of Western Visayas grew by about 15 percent during the first three quarters of 2007 compared to the same period last year, initial figures of the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics of the Department of Agriculture 6 show.

BAS figures indicate that production as of September had already reached 1.9 metric tons, while for the entire 2006, total production was only 1.987 metric tons.

Larry Nacionales, OIC regional executive director, said rice production in the second half offset the decrease in production during the first half.

Dried mango
exports grow 74%

The Philippines' dried mango exports increased by 73.86 percent, amounting to $7.252 million in the first seven months of 2007 as the country gained new markets in 12 countries, figures of the Department of Agriculture show.

The latest markets are Thailand , Germany , Ireland , French Polynesia , Oman , Greece , Cyprus , Cayman Islands, Saudi Arabia , Palau , Nigeria , and Kiribati .

Also, dried pineapple exports increased by 262.05 percent from last year's $80.994 million to $293.242 million this year, the DA figures indicate.
