Negros booters lose to Ilonggos

MANILA --- Negros Occidental absorbed its second straight loss in the 15-Under division of the Philippine Olympic Festival football tournament at the Philsports pitch in Pasig yesterday.

Missing the services of its top players, Negros got blanked by Iloilo , 5-0, dimming its chances of making the semifinals of the 10-team tournament.

It took only 10 minutes for the Ilonggos to break the ice as Jeffrey Domicillo burst through the penalty box and sent his left-footed strike to the right bottom corner.

Pelayo upsets Taiwanese ace

Jarry Pelayo of the Negros Billiard Stable stunned Taiwanese ace Ching Shun of Taiwan , 9-8, yesterday at the start of the Negros Oriental International 9-ball Championships at the Dumaguete Convention Center .

Another Bacoleño, Ramil "Bebeng" Gallego edged countryman Elmer Haya, 9-8, to advance to the next round opposite 2006 Doha Asian games 8-ball gold medalist Satoshi Kawabata of Japan, who stamped his class over Edgard Acaba, 9-7.

In other matches, Neils Feijen of the Netherlands crushed 2006 World Pool Champion Ronato Alcano, 9-4, while Francisco "Django" Bustamante whipped Efren "Bata" Reyes, 9-2, and Rodolfo Luat scored a 9-4 victory over Japan's Kunihiko Takahasi.

Ateneo downs SSC

QUEZON CITY --- Ateneo closed the first three quarters with aplomb to pummel San Sebastian College, 78-51, yesterday for a place in the last eight of the National Collegiate Champions League at the Blue Eagle Gym here.

The Blue Eagles turned up the pressure just when the Stags were slowing down in the late stages, capping the first three frames with bristling runs to forge a quarterfinal showdown with the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers on Nov. 21.

The Bombers advanced after beating West Negros College, 83-61, Tuesday.
