Scrap ‘D' sugar, NFSP urges

Enrique Rojas, president of the National Federation of Sugarcane Planters Inc., in a press statement yesterday called on the Sugar Regulatory Administration to scrap the allocation of 5 percent for “D” or world market sugar as it can cause huge losses for sugar producers, more than 80 percent of which are marginal farmers.

The NFSP, in a resolution passed during its special general membership and board meeting at its main office on November 10, the group asked SRA to allocate the 5 percent sugar production to “C” or Reserve, convertible into “B” or Domestic as the necessity warrants in the future.

SRA Sugar Order No. 1-A dated Oct. 17, 2007 revised the percentage allocation of all sugar produced beginning week ending Oct. 21, 2007 as follows: 6 percent, “A” or US Quota; 89 percent, “B” or Domestic; and 5 percent, “D” or World Market.
