| An enriching
experience for all
The very successful Suntown Camp attended by 30 children with cancer and those whose parents have cancer at Maryshore in Talisay City was a moving and enriching experience for them and for the volunteers who participated.
The camp directors were Dr. Marvie Abesamis and Millie Kilayko, with Dr. Estrella “Yanky” Agustin, Dr. Isabel Melgar, Dr. Alvin Parreño, and Lilibeth Cordova as assistant camp directors. Chona Flores and Girl Cuaycong were in charge of finance, Tima Lacson of food, Roy and Marian Hojilla manned the secretariat and Hazelyn Guerrero was in charge transportation.
The 30 participants on the first day were a little bit shy despite the warm welcome from the volunteers and the Jollibee mascot. Volunteers Jun-Jun and Patricia Tolosa provided the mascots and packed merienda for the children.
By the second day the children had shed off their inhibitions and were happy and excited as they boarded the Riverside school bus with camp counselors, doctors and volunteers for the children's museum in Sagay where Lilibeth Cordova had organized a tour for them.
At the Museo sang Bata sa Negros in Sagay City , the children played and learned. They were also treated to a puppet show by children who live near the museum.
Later they were brought to the Balay Kauswagan for a sumptuous lunch hosted by Mayor Alfredo and Dr. Marilyn Marañon, then they explored the premises and played games.
On their return to Maryshore that afternoon the children were given a Christmas-in-November surprise. Waiting for them was a huge Christmas tree and a snowman, Christmas music, presents that included watches for everyone and entertainment provided by the angels of Assumption class of '65. Sylvia de la Paz also gave the children treats.
On the third day the camp graduation was held with parents of the children present. The volunteers and children told of the fun they had and of their experiences at the camp bringing tears to the eyes of many, and talent numbers were presented. Camp participant Jelly An Agudo, whose mother has cancer, was also surprised with a birthday cake from the Assumption Class ‘65 ladies.
The children went home with lots of goodies and toys and many new friends, and the volunteers and organizers with happy memories of how, instead of them giving, having learned and gained so much from the experience.
Susie Bayot Ortigas also gave the volunteers a delicious lunch later.
