BY PATRICK PANGILINAN

Five road accidents claimed the lives of five persons, including a police major working as an aide-de-camp of Interior and Local Governments Secretary Ronaldo Puno, in Negros Occidental Sunday and yesterday.

Chief Inspector Benjie Quingking, aide-de-camp of Puno was killed when his vehicle turned turtle and slammed into a tree in Kabankalan City at about 2 a.m. yesterday.

He sustained head injuries and was declared dead on arrival at the Kabankalan District Hospital .

Chief Inspector Calixto Mabugat, Kabankalan police chief, said Quingking was on his way home when the Mitsubishi Adventure vehicle he was riding on figured in the accident at the highway of Brgy. Binicuil, Kabankalan City , which is undergoing repair.

Quingking was unconscious when he was pulled out from the driver's seat by the responding members of the Kabankalan Rescue Group, Mabugat said.

The vehicle driven by Quingking was almost a total wreck, Mabugat added.

Quingking, a member of the Philippine National Police Academy Class ‘98, worked at the DILG central office in Metro Manila as an aide-de-camp of Puno.

Another motorist also died, while his driver-companion was injured, when the motorcycle they were riding on slammed into the rear of a cargo truck loaded with sugarcane stalled along the highway of Sitio Nato, Brgy. Aguisan in Himamaylan City , Sunday night.

Chief Inspector Armando Tubongbanua, Himamaylan police chief, yesterday identified the victim who died on the spot as Mario Banas, 43, and his companion, who sustained injuries in the different parts of his body as Darius Lamasan.*GPB

In Bacolod City , three persons died in vehicular accidents during weekend, the police said.

Edgardo Jamora, 38, was riding on his bicycle when the rear of a mini-bus driven by Ramon Mosquera hit him at the intersection of Magsaysay Avenue and Araneta Street , in the city, at about 5:30 a.m. Sunday, PO3 Benedicto Villarias of the Traffic Management Unit said yesterday.

Jamora, of Purok 4, Magsungay, Brgy. Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City , lost his balance and his head was hit by the rear tires of the mini-bus, Villarias added.

Mosquera, who surrendered to the Bacolod City Police Office after the incident, is now detained at Police Station 6, he said.

Glenn Redante of Sta. Clara Subdivision, in the city, on the other hand, died while being treated at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center due to head injuries Sunday, about an hour after he fell from the motorcycle driven by his friend, Niel Ronquilo, Villarias said.

Redante fell when their vehicle collided with the car of John Alfred Yanson at the corner of Magsaysay Avenue and Lacson Street , Bacolod at about 2 a.m. Sunday, Villarias added.

Yanson, 19, is confined at the Doctor's Hospital because of “depression” after the incident, Villarias said.

In a separate incident, Romeo Parar was declared dead on arrival at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital after he was run over by the cement mixer truck driven by Rudy Hotohot, 43, at San Juan Street , in the city, at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, police records showed.

In his report, Villarias said Parar, of Purok Masagana 99, Brgy. 6, was crossing the road when Hotohot's truck ran over him.

Hotohot, 42, of Silay City , Negros Occidental, claimed he had already passed Parar when the victim “deliberately” lunged under the rear part of the vehicle.*PP
