QPP, Lopue's cagers
firm up cagefest lead

Queen of Peace Parish and Lopue's Batch 1999-2000 solidified their hold on the top spots in their respective brackets with contrasting victories over the weekend in the SJI Alumni Basketball Tournament at the SJI Activity Center in Bacolod City.

Buoyed by Fr. Noly Que's 37 points, QPP clobbered Ongsingco's 03-04, 109-85. Que hit five triples and was complemented by Arvin Gustilo's 15 markers.

Ongsingco's was led by Mark Vasquez and Michael Sian with 20 and 19 points, respectively.

Lopue's racked up its fourth win in as many games, following a 76-63 triumph over Foodman 97-98.

Paolo Li once again stood at the forefront of the assault with 19 points, while Mark Jimenez and David Lacson added 12 and 9, respectively.

LD Garrucho and Dino Tongco combined for 20 points to pace Foodman, which dropped to 1-2.

Meanwhile, the SJI Falcons recorded their second win in three matches as they nipped Alfie's Construction 01-02, 84-83, thanks to Raymund Lacson's 18 points.

In another bracket A game, Copix One 94-95 bounced back with a 91-76 triumph over Lopue's Kabankalan 96. Chris Castro registered 17 points to lead Copix together with Tubby Villanueva and Steve Cueva, who finished with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

Chino Ang had 23 points, while Ronnie Ongsingco, Bobby Vasquez and Bob Lim contributed 12 each for Batch 96.

Imay's 93 also stayed unbeaten in two games after squeaking past Kobe Motors 05-06, 95-90.

Andy Angudong wrapped up the win with a free throw with eight seconds left. Kobe squandered its next possession as Race Mendoza failed to find an open teammate as time expired.

Angodung came away with 23 points and Antonio Rogacion chipped in 21. Archie Co posted 18 points, including 12 in the third quarter.

Mendoza and Denjo Taneo led Kobe with 20 and 18 points, respectively.

Jason Barcelona, Gordon Yu and Pewee Demonteverde powered Marby Batch 91-92 past Boston Finance Batch 86-87-88, 103-66.

Omay Demonteverde scored 21 points, while Anthony Tajonera made 18 for Boston Finance, which lacked the services of main gunner Paul Liamson

The SJI Alumni batch wars is scheduled to coincide with St. John's 50th anniversary next month, a press release from organizers said.

Que and SJI alumni Dennis Coo said they are planning to increase the number of participating batches next year.

A volleyball tournament for the women alumni of SJI is also in being planned.
