‘Cinco de Noviembre'
reenactment set today

The Kanlaon Theatre Guild of Colegio San Agustin will perform “Cinco de Noviembre” 7:45 a.m. and 4 p.m. today, at the Provincial Capitol Park in Bacolod City , a press release from organizers said.

The show is a reenactment of events that led to the bloodless revolution in Negros Occidental in 1898 spearheaded by Generals Juan Araneta and Aniceto Lacson.

Meanwhile, the group will also perform excerpts from Dr. Jose Rizal's “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” at Balay Negrense at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, as part of the patronal fiesta of Silay City , Negros Occidental, the press release said.

The four vignettes and their respective directors are “Isang Gabi sa Buhay ni Sisa” by Gerlie Cometa; “Paalam” – Jillan Suclan; “Kapighati-an ng Isang Intsik” – Eugene Cataluña; and “Basilio at Simon” – Ricardo Salanap Jr. Overall artistic director is Rudy Reveche, the press release added.*

turnover slated

The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. will turn over 10 two-classroom school buildings to various recipients in Bacolod City and the southern Negros areas, Thursday and Friday, a press release from the FFCCCII said.

The project is in cooperation with the Southern Negros Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. headed by Carlos Javellana, president emeritus and director of the FFCCCII, and president Adolfo Lim, with the Northern Negros Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. headed by Reynaldo Espina.

The beneficiaries with their donors are Felisa Elementary School in Brgy. Felisa, Bacolod donated by Peter Coliangco; Jovito Sayson National High School, Brgy Felisa – Victor Lim; Bacolod City National High School, Bacolod – Tai Kuo Hsing; Francisco Flores Elementary School, Brgy. Punta Taytay, Bacolod – Luis Limqueco; Banago Elementary School-1, Bacolod – Antonio Kho;

Vista Alegre Granada Relocation Elementary School, Bacolod – Chua Beng Teng and Alfredo Yao; Pacol Elementary School, Valladolid, Negros Occidental – Jimmy Ang/Fine Plas; Isla Elementary School, Purok Isla, Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod – William Gosiaco; and Ramon Torres National High School-Main, Bago City – Tan Tian Siong, the press release said.

The “Operation: Barrio Schools” project of the FFCCCII has donated more than 3,700 two-classroom school buildings to different barangays, municipalities and cities in the country.

It is the centerpiece long-range school building project envisioned to reach 4,000 units by the end of 2008, the press release added.*

Silay marks
‘Kasaysayan' Festival

The “Kasaysayan Festival” set today in Silay City, Negros Occidental will dramatize the bloodless revolution of Nov. 5, 1898, with the theme, “Let's preserve historical pride and celebrate our freedom”, a press release from the Silay tourism office said.

Now on its fifth year, the festival is sponsored by the Silay City government in coordination with the Brgy. Cinco de Noviembre Council, Sangguniang Kabataan-Silay and the Tourism Office.

A Thanksgiving Mass at 6 a.m. will be held at San Diego Pro-Cathedral, followed by a motorcade around the city at 7 a.m.

A program honoring the sugarcane workers who stormed the Spanish garrison 109 years ago will be held at the 5 de Noviembre Marker, Cinco de Noviembre Street , Brgy. Cinco de Noviembre, the press release said.

Messages will be given by Vice Mayor Mark Golez, Mayor Jose Montelibano and Rep. Jose Carlos Lacson (3 rd District, Neg. Occ.).

The El Cinco de Noviembre story will be retold by Ver Pacete, tourism officer and the world-renowned Kabataang Silay Rondalla Ensemble will render music of yesteryears.

Other features include the sale of hometown delicacies at the public plaza, hampang – Silaynon, drum corps competition, dance-drama showcase, and fireworks display.

The Saringkulay Band and The New Arrival will provide music for the evening plaza goers, the press release added.*

Storytelling workshop held

A storytelling workshop sponsored by Alitaptap was conducted recently at the Negros Museum in Bacolod City , a press release from organizers said.

Participants were teachers, librarians and students, who were taught how to tell stories effectively and become comic strip illustrators and actors.

Starting this month, the group will tell stories for free every 9:30 a.m. during Saturdays at the Negros Museum . Storytelling dates will be on Nov. 10, 17 and 24, the press release said.

The officers of the storytelling group are Juliet Torres, Mimi Olorga, Betty Sue Cuadra, Lolita Cabahug, Lulu Sarrosa, Noreen Alcala, Inah Abijay, Kristine Golez, Genevieve Penetrante, Christina Casis, Nikkie Secatin, Virgie Mugar, Sheila Dela Cruz, Maritess Vasquez, Mylyn Salupisa, and Jelly Parojillo, the press release added.*
