| The 1 st Monico “Golden Gloves” Tournament, an inter-Bacolod barangay amateur boxing competition, takes centerstage at the North Terminal of the SM City on Nov. 18 with hundreds of promising young boxers vying for the gold in 12 weight categories.
The final date of the opening was firmed up Tuesday during a meeting of Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella and SM City mall manager George Jardiolin at the event venue, a press release from organizers said.
The weekends-only event, a joint undertaking of the Bacolod Congressional District, the Negros Amateur Boxing Association and the Philippine Sports Commission, aims to revive the Bacoleños' enthusiasm for the discipline that brought numerous international honors for the country in the last three decades, event chairman Monico “Nicky” Puentevella Jr. said.
Puentevella Jr. is also chief organizer of the Monico Cup Inter-Barangay Summer Basketball Tournament, which is entering its seventh year.
Veteran boxing jury Nonoy Quiachon has been named tournament commissioner, Puentevella Jr. said.
The Negros Amateur Boxing Association, led by its president, former Bacolod Vice Mayor Juan Ramon “Monju” Guanzon, will assist in the competitions being the local association for the sport.
Jardiolin said that “Golden Gloves” will be featured by SM City in its official calendar of activities for the months of November and December through its various merchandising plus and promo materials like standees, signages, logos and media-related blitz.
Twelve championship crowns will be at stake — 26 kgs, 28 kgs, 30 kgs, 32 kgs, 34 kgs, 36 kgs, 38 kgs, 40 kgs, 42 kgs, 45 kgs, 48 kgs and 51 kgs — during the Sundays-only matches.
The eligibility rules and details of the amateur tournament will be disseminated shortly after the next meeting with barangay boxing coordinators, Puentevella Jr. said.
Organizers initially ruled that competing boxers should not be older than 20 on the opening of the tournament as reflected in their baptismal/birth certificate or DepEd Form 138.
The “Golden Gloves” is also open to competitors who had been medalists in any provincial level tournaments, but “they should be seeded”, Puentevella explained.
For more information, barangay boxing coordinators are advised to contact the Bacolod Congressional District Office at Tel. No. 434-9487 during office hours.*
