| Social
Welfare and Development officer Marina Mendoza has asked the Dumaguete City government
for funds to accommodate more scholars. Mendoza said that since 1995, the
city has been allocating about P1.5 million for the scholarship of college students.
There are now 147 scholars and the DSWD is planning to add 35 from the 70 applicants.
The city scholarship program was institutionalized for poor but deserving
students, on top of the other scholarships it offers for high school students
and elementary pupils. Mendoza said she hopes the city will be able to provide
additional P300,000 for new scholars. "We have accountants, teachers,
engineers, chemists and others," Mendoza said of former scholars. The
scholarship is available to incoming college students whose family income does
not go beyond P7,000 monthly, with an average grade of 85, and who have been residing
in the city for not less than five years, Mendoza added.*RA back
