BY JUANCHO GALLARDE & RENE GENOVE

Hundreds of thousands of pesos worth of property went up in smoke when fire engulfed a densely populated area and gutted down more than 30 houses, while one person was injured, at about 11 a.m. yesterday at Sitio Canday-ong, Barangay Calindagan, in Dumaguete City.

Reported injured in the blaze was Marietta Mascardo, of legal age, who was trying to salvage some of her property, arson investigators said. The conflagration quickly spread to nearby houses mostly made of light materials, including that of Dumaguete Councilor Nelson Patrimonio, because of strong winds.

Initial investigation disclosed that the fire came from the residence of the Mascardos, Senior Fire Officer 2 Cristino Bato, said.

BY RENE GENVOE

The Department of Health has warned the public of the possible spread in Oriental Negros of leprosy, a highly contagious skin disease, after noting an increase in the number of cases in the province for the past years.

A press release from Dr. Joanri Riveral, assistant regional leprosy coordinator in Central Visayas, said that, as of January 2007, Oriental Negros has 19 reported leprosy cases compared to the 11 reported last year. Riveral said he believes the actual number could be higher than what has been reported.

Leprosy is a disease that mainly affects the skin, eyes and mucusa of the upper respiratory tract. It is caused by "mycrobacterium leprae", an acid-fast bacilli affecting all ages and both sexes.

Tuting seeks apology
from local columnist
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Re-elected Dumaguete City Mayor Agustin Perdices said he would demand a public apology from a columnist who allegedly maligned his name as a public official during the May 14 elections.

Perdices cried foul against columnist Dindo Generoso, of the Negros Chronicle, and now based in Sydney, Australia, for allegedly publishing false accusations that he manipulated the election results during the canvassing of votes at the City Hall, on May 15. Perdices said he is challenging Generoso to lay down all his evidences to prove the charges. If indeed the accusations are true, Perdices said he is willing to resign his post.

The mayor said that since he was elected mayor of Dumaguete City, Generoso was the only person who has made such serious allegations against him.
