| St. Benilde School and Bacolod Professionals prevailed over their
opponents to bag the championship title in their respective category in the BUS
Group basketball tournament. The boys from St. Benilde, survived a scare
from the much-improved University of St. La Salle, 90-83, in the finals of the
14-under at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center. The BAPRO dribblers,
on the other hand, tamed Basketball Unified Sports Group Team `A', 70-64, in the
38-Above division. The championship matchup between BAPRO and Basketball
Unified was played at the Lopue's South Square gym. With coach Christian
Escote directing the game of St. Benilde, the team jumped to a 50-36 lead in the
first half. The Junior Stingers of coach Troy Sarabia, however, closed
the gap at the start of the last canto. St. Benilde's lapses in both ends
of the court in the second half almost cost them the victory, however, tournament
most valuable player Christian Avanceņa, Boy Macote, and Christian Pepino stirred
their team to safety with outstanding deliveries. Macote scored 24 and
Avanceņa put in 21 to keep St. Benilde on the lead as the game clock expired.
Except for minor disagreements among parents in the audience, the 14-under
division of the BUS Group tournament proved to be exciting. In the 3-Above
category, Boy Torres and Shad Guanzon scored 12 each and Emil Guanzon 10 to pace
BAPRO against Basketball Unified. Rommel Teruel and Fritz Varca contributed
8 apiece while Nap Ledesma chipped in 4 points to secure the victory for BAPRO.*NB
