A total of 873 candidates in Negros Occidental are running for public office in the May polls with five bets for mayor and seven for vice mayor unopposed, Commission on Elections records showed yesterday.

Unopposed mayoralty bets are Alejandro Mirasol (NPC) of Binalbagan, Jilson Tubillara (NPC-UNA) of San Enrique, Renato Malabor (KAMPI) of Isabela, Joyce Alvarez (NPC) of Ilog and Soledad Montilla (NPC) of Sipalay. The vice mayoralty candidates who are unopposed are Gerardo Valmayor Jr. (NPC) of San Carlos, Cynthia de la Cruz (NPC-UNA) of Don Salvador Benedicto, Leo Rafael Cueva (Lakas CMD-UNA) of Sagay, Nilo Jeus Anotonio Niel Lizares III (KAMPI) - Talisay, Joselino Santiago Sr. (NPC) of Murcia, John Deles (KAMPI) of Moises Padilla, and Oscar Montilla (NPC) of Sipalay.

In Himamaylan Mayor Carminia Bascon (KAMPI) is being challenged for the mayorship by her nephew lawyer Alain Gatuslao (Lakas CMD) and niece, businesswoman Alice Gatuslao (Independent).

Bascon said she welcomes the challenge.

Of the 871 running for office, 78 are going to 32 mayoralty seats, 79 for 32 vice mayoralty seats and 716 for 284 councilor seats.
