Solar 1 oil leak
nears 2M liters
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Close to 2 million liters of oil spilled into the sea when MV Solar 1 sank off the coast of Guimaras in August last year, Carlos Tan, Petron Health, Safety and Environment Officer, said yesterday.

The estimate was based on the findings of the Allied Shield crew, the vessel tasked with retrieving oil from the sunken vessel. As of yesterday nine of the 10 tanks that were supposed to contain 2.2 million liters of Petron oil on board the Solar 1 were opened and only 5,000 liters of oil was found in them, Tan said.

With only one more tank to open Tan said it is believed that the bulk of the Solar 1 oil cargo had spilled out but he assured that the clean up of the oil that hit the coast of Guimaras has already been completed.*CPG
