Local teams fall in
beach volley tilt

The St. La Salle duo of Marlon Luces and Mark Sabusap missed out on a slot to the national finals of the 11th National Nestea beach volleyball tournament, after dropping their last two matches yesterday in the Visayas leg of the competition at the La Salle Greenhills sand courts in Manila.

The pair lost a three-setter to the University of San Carlos, 19-21, 21-19, 9-15. Luces and Sabusap then bowed to Foundation University in a two-set make-or-break match, 15-21, 15-21.

USLS coach Carl Barredo said in a telephone interview that the tandem "did their best but fared poorly in their serves and their attack."

"They were fatigued from their games on the first day," he explained.

University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos spikers Alfredo Tijones and Ian Tuala also failed to qualify to the national finals slated in Boracay Island.

USC topped the men's division, followed by the University of Southern Philippines Foundation and Foundation University.

Lasallians Realyn Valenciano and Sheryl Silva were also eliminated after a loss at the hands of Southwestern University.

"It was their first time to join. It's hard to win in beach volleyball if you don't have the experience yet," Barredo said of the tandem's loss.

In the women's category, the University of San Jose Recoletos clinched the first place while the University of and Southwestern University placed second and third, respectively.*PP
