Mia, Anya to
compete in Thailand

Bacolod-born golf standouts Mia Piccio and Anya Tanpinco are part of the Philippine contingent that will see action in the Thailand Ladies Open, which tees off today at the President Gold and Conference Center.

The 5,800-yard layout is sleek and boasts of fast greens, Piccio's father, Ernesto "Boy" told the DAILY STAR in a text message. The tournament serves as a prelude for the summer campaign of Piccio, who is supported by ITCSI of businessman Ricky Razon.

The Bacolod shotmaker, who showed her immense potential when she placed second in the inaugural RP Ladies Amateurs, will also compete in the Thailand Juniors and tournaments in Australia next month.

She won a title in the Junior Amateur Golf Scholars Tour in the United States last year.

Tanpinco won a silver in team play in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games but was disqualified in the Doha Asian Games because she failed to sign her scorecard.

Both Piccio and Tanpinco are products of the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.

Also seeing action in the Thailand Open are Dottie Ardina, who is coming off an impressive second place finish in the individual competition of the 29th Queen Sikirit Cup; Cyna Rodriguez; Linnel De Villa and Chihiro Ikeda. The RP contingent is led by national coach Bong Lopez and Chris Guerrero. *CPT
