IN STA. CATALINA
Political gimmick, Army
says of harassment claims
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The military yesterday dismissed the claims of partylist groups that they harassed residents in the upland areas of Santa Catalina, Oriental Negros, as a "political gimmick" to get the sympathy of the people.

Partylist groups Bayan Muna, Anak Pawis and Kabataan had accused soldiers of the 61st Infantry Battalion of harassing their members and resident in the hinterland barangays of Santa Catalina. In a manifesto, the party-list groups cited incidents in Sitios Kadlum, Calangagay, Itom-itom, Batok-batok and Nagod-od, all in Barangay Nagbalaye, Sta. Catalina, where 20 families have evacuated for fear of their lives, allegedly because they were harassed by soldiers.

Diocese needs
poll volunteers
BY RENE GENOVE

The Diocesan Electoral Board is calling for youth volunteers as poll watchers in the 3,500 polling precincts in Oriental Negros for the May 14 national and local elections.

DEB convenor Rev. Fr. Julius Heruela said 5,000 volunteers are needed for precinct assignments in Oriental Negros while 1,500 will be deployed in the 664 precincts in Siquijor province.

He said a volunteer should exercise non-partisanship, be of voting age 18 years, and should not be publicly supporting any candidate.

Preserve rich
tourism culture: Gordon
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Senator Richard Gordon challenged Oriental Negros officials to preserve the rich tourism culture of the province.

Gordon, a former Tourism Secretary, was in the province Wednesday as commencement speaker at the Negros Maritime College Foundation.

He said he appreciated the traffic situation in Dumaguete City and its environment-friendly atmosphere. Gordon said these should be maintained because not all cities and provinces in the country have this relaxing ambiance.
