The Akapin Partylist group is seeking at least 64,000 votes from
the 639,000 total voting population of Oriental Negros in order
to have representation in the Congress.
Akapin, a group of persons with disabilities hopes to win in
the May 14 elections in what is their fourth attempt now.
Its nominee, Katrina Segundo, said during their campaign in
the province recently that they are the most marginalized sector
in society but they want to correct the perception that PWDs only
receive dole-outs.
She said their members can become partners in community development
and they need the support from the government. Segundo said there
are laws protecting disabled persons but, if given representation,
Akapin will push to avail of benefits given to senior citizens.
The latest survey of the Department of Social Welfare and
Development revealed that there are 12 million disabled persons
in the country. Their number continues to increase, including those
living in the hinterland barangays, it added.
Oriental Negros PWD chairperson Gaudiel Rapada said the country
has an estimated 120,000 persons with disabilities, and added that
they are thankful for the support given to them by Negrenses.*MA
