Kabankalan XI pulls off upset

Kabankalan pulled off a stunning 2-1 upset of Celta De Victorias Sunday to virtually clinch a place in the semifinals of the NOFA Under-17 Provincial Football Championships at the Bacolod City National High School pitch.

The win puts Kabankalan on top of Group C with six points and only a monumental blunder against winless La Consolacion School-Gardenville this weekend can deny them a place in the semifinals.

Defending champion San Carlos City and Sylvia Manor Hotel-Pontevedra also streaked to their second straight victories to move closer to a slot in the knockout stage. San Carlos surpassed Pontevedra's huge 12-0 win with a thorough 15-0 beating of Negros Occidental High School in Group A. But they would need to hurdle an in-form Handumanan squad in their last elimination game.

Handumanan blanked Cadiz, 3-0, Saturday. Group D has been thrown wide open with University of St. La Salle holding Bago to a 2-all draw.

But the La Sallians' opening day conqueror St. Michael Academy-Pontevedra succumbed to Escalante, 9-0.

The outcome left Bago as the only unbeaten team with four points, followed by Escalante and SMA with three points each. La Salle is in fourth with a single point. *CPT
